Boy Harsher – Jeans
Boy Harsher needs little introduction in the dark electronic scene. “Jeans” is their latest single and it arrives with the same hypnotic, driving energy the project has always delivered.
Nostalgic synths open and drive much of the track. The bass arp is the standout element, one of the most satisfying aspects of the song and the kind of hook that stays with you well after the track ends. The song is built around a minimalist, retro-industrial aesthetic that feels both timeless and immediately danceable.
Jae Matthews delivers in her signature almost spoken-word style, sitting above the pulsating rhythms with the kind of eerie detachment that defines the project. The combination of that vocal approach with the driving production is precisely what has made Boy Harsher one of the most compelling acts in the scene.
Lyrically the song follows a familiar American arc. Small town, big dreams, selling jeans. There is something quietly devastating about the specificity of that last image and the way it deflates the mythology of escape. “Gave it all up just to sell jeans” lands differently every time.
The video was directed by Augustus Muller.
