Neuroticfish – Skin26

Neuroticfish is the project of Sascha Mario Klein, originating in Bochum, Germany. “Skin” first appeared in 1998 on the Maschinenwelt compilation “A Reflexion Of Synthpop Vol. 1,” recorded in his living room with an eight-track recorder, three synthesizers, one sampler, and a SM-58 microphone. Its fusion of industrial, synthpop, and techno influences helped establish what we would eventually come to recognize as futurepop. “Skin26” is the latest chapter in the song’s ongoing journey, following the 2002 evolution “Skin Binary” and arriving nearly three decades after the original.

The reimagining offers some remarkably nice retro nostalgia while still feeling current. There is something about hearing a classic track from the early days of the scene brought forward with modern production that carries a particular kind of emotional weight for anyone who was there for it. The comparison that comes to mind is Devision Redux and their recent reimagining of De/Vision material. The instinct is similar: honor the source, update the execution.

“Skin26” manages both. The production is contemporary and club-ready. The core that made the original compelling is intact. Still huge, still emotional, still compulsively danceable. Klein’s vocal remains as compelling as ever.

For those who came up in the dark electronic scene of the late 90s and early 2000s, this is a genuinely satisfying listen. For those discovering it fresh, it stands on its own terms.
