Soft Faith – A Place to Hide (feat. Heather Nation)

Soft Faith is a New York duo fronted by Aaron Thompson. “A Place to Hide” is a double single alongside “Castles and Cathedrals,” both of which will appear on Soft Faith’s self-titled debut album due June 26. The track was written during Thompson’s divorce and the burden of that weight carries through immensely. The sadness that comes through is strong and genuine, and it is beautiful in the way that only honest pain can be.

Heather Nation joins on vocals and while the addition gives the track an additional layer of texture, the song’s emotional core belongs entirely to Aaron Thompson. There are moments where you find yourself wondering what a solo version would sound like, and whether the duet format serves the material as well as it could.

The keys are the other standout element. There is something about their character that evokes classic 80s horror film scores in the best possible sense, eerie and fascinating in equal measure. Paired with the vocals and lyrics, they give the song both its sadness and its cinematic quality.

The lyrics hit a balance of clarity and turmoil that accompanies traumatic life events without melodrama. Thompson is exposed emotionally throughout and the imagery lands without apology.

The debut album cannot come soon enough.
